OKW - Shuttleworth Creek

Status:   Active - Non-Operational
Site Type: Instream Remote Detection System  |  Organization: Okanagan Nation Alliance
General Operational Period: Year Round
Start Date: 7/10/2016 12:00 AM

Two 10-foot Pass-through antennas are installed in Shuttleworth Creek, a tributary to the Okanagan River in Canada, immediately upstream of the bridge at Cedar Street. Each antenna is connected to an IS1001, located on shore. The antenna is approximately 500 m from the Okanagan River. The site uses DC power. The site was originally installed with two pass-over antennas and a QuBE controller, but was updated to current configuration in April 2019.

Configuration

Configuration metadata includes details about the equipment used at the site to detect and record PIT tags. A new configuration sequence record is created when equipment is added or removed from the site and the period of time it was active. A configuration sequence without an End Date is currently active.

Changed site orientation, although site still down as creek is dry.

Moved PIT Array downstream ~20m and changed to pass-over orientation. Two half arrays now cover the wetted width, though it is possible PIT tagged fish may get through undetected becaue the antennas are offset. Job box has been moved to the left bank. A solar panel will be set up for the following year in order to minimize data gaps due to battery swaps.

4/24/2023 12:00:00 AM SiteDown

Site Down: An early and sudden freshet brought down debris which opened the 'gate' of the antennas. Water was too dangerous to enter. One antenna was saved and one antenna was lost. Site not in operation for the remainder of the year.

Site up and Running for Spring 2023 - Site was not powered during Winter 2022/2023

10/2/2022 12:00:00 AM SiteDown

Site Down: low temperatures and low water resulted in creek freezing earlier than normal.

8/16/2022 12:00:00 AM SiteUp

Site Up & Running - Reinstalled to pass-through orientation again.

Will access site to change to pass-over orientation next year.

5/4/2022 12:00:00 AM SiteDown

Site Down - was in operation until 05/02/2022. Freshet brought fast flowing waters which brought flows up to the high water mark and ripped out the streamside T-posts anchoring the antennas into the ground. Debris was caught up in the junction of the two antennas, and the antenna gates did not 'open up' as they were installed to do. This site should be moved to a pass-over orientation next year.

Maintenance check at Shuttleworth Creek.

A nearby home owner created a pool by building a rock dam across the creek, approximately 5m downstream of pit arrays. Approximately 100 fry were trapped in the pool. A middle section of the pool was removed in order to allow water to flow and fish to move.

6/28/2021 10:00:00 AM SiteDown
  • Site is currently down, likely due to battery issue.
  • Antenna was not removed as it appeared to be working during the last visit (June 25, 2021)
  • Could not connect via Bluetooth, likely due to faulty batteries. 6 batteries brought to shop for load testing.
  • Site will be up and running ASAP. Both antennas will be checked to ensure they are working. If one antenna is not working, it will be removed.
6/18/2021 1:00:00 PM SiteUp

Actions Taken:

  • Previous Week: Pit Arrays reinstalled, although could not connect to Bluetooth. Damaged antenna was noted (Left Bank – 252). Did not download data
  • Went back to site, successfully connected via Bluetooth. Downloaded data from both antenna after running a test tag through.
  • Damaged antenna 252 did not receive test tag. Intact antenna 249 successfully received test tag

Next Steps:

  • Review data and old files to determine past issues present
  • Remove damaged antenna ASAP and reconfigure working antenna to cover area of stream with most volume (as needed).
  • Replace antenna in future when border opens.
  • Consider reconfiguring setup to flat-plane as removal during freshet is causing missed adult steelhead detections
  • Consider new site with less velocity.
4/22/2021 10:30:00 AM SiteDown Site down, Pulled antennas out due to rising flows causing daily debris jams on the antennas, will re-install when flows drop.
4/14/2021 9:45:00 AM SiteUp Hooked up site to batteries since water has returned to site.
12/8/2020 10:44:00 AM SiteDown Site down, just a trickle of water, will freeze soon
11/26/2020 10:45:00 AM SiteUp Powered site up. There is just a trickle of water in the creek. Has been dry recently.
9/2/2020 2:26:00 PM SiteDown Site down, no water
6/24/2020 11:00:00 AM SiteUp Reinstalled 2 antenna array. The site had been removed due to heavy spring flows.
4/27/2020 9:02:00 AM SiteDown Site down. Heavy debris and flows keep pushing the antenna downstream. Site will be down until water flows subside.
2/10/2020 10:00:00 AM SiteUp Site up. Hooked up batteries as ice levels have dropped and there is a small amount of water flowing.
12/21/2019 9:15:00 AM SiteDown Site down. Batteries swaps will resume in the new year.
9/19/2019 10:38:52 AM SiteUp Site powered up as water has returned
7/29/2019 10:40:00 AM SiteDown Site powered down - this section of the creek has run dry
5/5/2019 9:30:00 AM General Creek bed had scoured out the substrate beneath the PIT Array, leaving the bottom of the array above the surface of the water. I unstrapped the antennas and dug it down deeper into the substrate.
4/10/2019 5:00:00 PM SiteUp Installed temporary pass-through antenna system. 2 antennas standing up which will break away in the centre if high flows or debris are encountered. Site is up and running.
5/5/2018 3:06:00 PM SiteDown System down due to heavy damage from high water (flooding). Out of commisson indefinitely.
3/15/2018 3:06:00 PM SiteUp System Powered Up.
7/17/2017 3:00:00 PM SiteDown Reader turned off due to creek dewatering
