OKC - Okanagan Channel at VDS-3
Status: Active - OperationalGeneral Operational Period: Year Round
Start Date: 11/6/2009 12:00 AM
The OKC site is located in the Okanagan (Canadian spelling) Channel at 310th Avenue/Road 18 upstream from Osoyoos Lake. The river in this section is channelized and Vertical Drop Structures (n=17) are used to control the river gradient. The array is located approximately 130 ft downstream of VDS-3. The river at this location is approximately 80 ft wide, enabling nearly full coverage of the width with four 20-ft antennas. Detection of adult sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) is the primary focus of the array. Water depth during the sockeye salmon migration ranges from 10 to 24 inches. Optimal read range of 12-mm TX1411SST PIT tags in pass-by orientation ranges between 18 and 20 inches resulting in high detection efficiency. Four new antennas were added to the site in a second array in March 2017.

Partially: Downstream Array working, Upstream is not. Inside the DC interface box, the MC power cable 5amp fuse was blown. Replaced fuse, but MC would only work with one array plugged in. |

Site Upgrades: March 27, 2023. Replaced the former four 105 Ah deep cycle batteries with eight AGM batteries of 100Ah each, connected first in series and then in parallel, for a total 200Ah capacity, which increased reserve power from 1.5 hours to 4 hours. Site Voltage also increased by 1.5V as a result. Installed new Biomark battery switcher. |

Site visit to battery storage location (Water Survey of Canada shed). Visually inspected cabling and for potential blown fuses. Voltage tested batteries - all were providing ~13.5V. No obvious issues. Current at Antenna 07 had been continuously dropping for months since the node on Antenna 03 was replaced. The past year, Antenna 03 and 07 had been oppositely dropping current concomitant of one another (ie. when 03 loses current, 07 gains current, then 07 loses current and 03 gains current). Immediately after the site visit, Antenna 07 regained current and has not dropped since. This relationship between 03 and 07 appeared to have seasonal influences, therefore close monitoring will be necessary in 2022. |

Actions Taken:
Observations:
Staff troubleshot with Biomark, and met with Water Survey of Canada to inquire regarding recent power surges at the WSC Station immediately upstream where the MC Batteries are stored.
Next Steps:
Biomark believes Node 4 corrosion likely due to loose connection, as exposed pins will arc in water. However; canbus connection from Node 4 male to Female 3 was secure, and was corroded upon opening. |
7/30/2021 10:11:00 AM | GMC |
Cleared Debris and Milfoil on and around all upstream and downstream antennas. |
7/9/2021 1:00:00 PM | GMC |
Maintenance Check at OKC. Antenna 03 is currently down. Conducted visual inspection and could not find any obvious issues. Likely faulty antenna as it has zero current. Biomark will be manually logging into master controller and tune the antenna while the sockeye are moving through (only during regular work days & hours). This is a mitigation measure for the current season but will need to be removed and replaced or repaired in future. Also conducted a read range test with test tags. Read range was lower for upstream antennas 01-04. Antennas 01-04 have higher noise which may be affecting the reduced read range; this is likely due to the proximity to the upstream VDS and the vehicle bridge over the VDS. |
3/18/2021 10:00:00 AM | General | Inspected nodes 3 and 7, and associated cabling. Attempted to determine the cause of low current in antennas 3 and 7. Could not locate any obvious problems, will need attention in the future. |
6/28/2019 11:25:13 AM | SiteDown | Site was down from approximately 6/20 at 08:26 PM to 6/28 at 10:07 AM due to power issues. |
3/16/2017 12:00:00 AM | General | Installed four new 20' antennas and IS1001 readers upstream of the existing array. New antennas are A1-A4 and existing antennas were renamed to A5-A8. |
10/26/2016 1:20:09 PM | General | A new modem was installed by Skyeler Folks and the site is now automatically uploading data again. I turned on site checking |
9/21/2016 3:08:43 PM | General | Master Controller and IS-1001 firmware was updated from version 1.6.0 to 1.6.1 |
9/20/2016 8:21:38 AM | General | I changed the exciter voltage level on all antennas from 4 to 3. |
7/11/2016 6:35:27 AM | General | Switcher batteries were swapped out on Saturday 7/9. I increased the input voltage level to 3 on Monday 7/11. |
6/4/2016 7:00:00 AM | General | The input voltage at the site dropped below 18V on Saturday morning at about 07:45 am PST. This caused the readers to automatically go into standby. I put the readers back into scan mode on 6/6 at about 05:45 am. The input voltage is currently about 22V. One of the switcher batteries has possibly gone bad causing the input voltage to drop. |
4/26/2016 4:34:00 PM | General | The Master Controller and reader firmware were upgraded to version 1.6.0. After the upgrade the Master Controller reverted back to it's default ID of 01 instead of the correct A0. This caused a couple of rejected files last night. I changed the ID back to the correct one and will manually repair the rejected files and re submit them. |
9/15/2015 4:06:25 PM | General | Site file checking has been temporarily disabled. |
9/15/2015 2:00:11 PM | General | On 8/25 and 8/26, the mux reader was replaced with a Master Controller and four IS-1001's. |
9/15/2015 2:00:11 PM | General | A new cell modem was installed at OKC. I configured the modem and downloaded the MC buffer and uploaded the buffer to PTAGIS. |
