MVP - Mid-Valley Acclimation Pond

Status:   Active - Non-Operational
Site Type: Monitored Fish Release  |  Organization: Yakama Nation
General Operational Period: Seasonally
Start Date: 3/23/2012 4:10 PM

The site is installed within the outlet of the lower most pond in an off-channel pond complex on the Methow River, located at River km 87.6. The outlet is approximately .5 mi. in length with a wetted width varying from 3ft to 50 feet. The detection systems are installed in series within the outlet and are comprised of three model 2001F-ISO portable PIT detection units. The first antenna is a 24in X 24in pass through and identified as Upstream antenna 01, while second and third antennas are 9ft X 3ft pass-through antennas and identified as Middle antenna 02 and Downstream antenna 03, respectively. Upstream antenna 01 is located approximately 40 ft. upstream of Middle antenna 02, while Middle antenna 02 is approximately 15 ft. upstream of Downstream antenna 03. The interrogation systems are intended to monitor juvenile escapement, in-pond, and smolt to smolt survival. The systems are operational during juvenile acclimation. Typical times of operation for this site are March 1 to June 15.

Antenna (01), Antenna (02), and Antenna (03) downloads were combined into one interrogation file.

On 03-28-2023, YNF staff were aware of a pond breach when several PIT tags were detected on all three acclimation antennas and downstream arrays. YNF Staff immediately inspected the pond perimeter and discovered a hole along the net on the downstream end of the pond area. YNF Staff blocked the breach to the best of their ability.

Interrogation event log for the Mid-Valley Pond Acclimation Site (MVP) - 2021 release

PIT tag interrogation system (Antenna 01) for the Mid-Valley Pond began on 03-11-2021 at 1200 hrs. Antenna (01) was located 3 meters upstream of the wooden bridge (pond outlet). A total of 20 files were downloaded throughout the interrogation period. Antenna (01) did not experience any lapse of coverage during release. PIT tag detections were observed prior to our release date of 04-26-2021. These escapees are believed to be attributed to an undetected small gap in the barrier net via snow melt at the site. Staff snorkeled the net multiple times to eliminate any holes in the net and secured the lead line.  Antenna (01) was removed on 05-17-2021 at 1200 hrs due to high flows.

On 03-14-2021 prior to the installation of the Mid-Valley pond acclimation site PIT tag interrogation system (Antenna 02) and (Antenna 03), staff were made aware of a breach based on a high number of tags from the group being detected at downstream detection locations. Staff immediately inspected the pond perimeter and discovered a large hole that had formed through the base of the containment berm on the downstream end of the pond area due to snow melt and rising temperatures allowing an escape point available to the rearing group. Due to the breach, these escapees had bypassed the pond outlet PIT tag interrogation system (Antenna 01). Staff successfully blocked the breach point and it was continuously monitored throughout the month. The high majority of escapee detections were observed between March 13 and 14.

PIT tag interrogation system (Antenna 02) for the Mid-Valley Pond began on 03-14-2021 at 1500 hrs. Antenna (02) was located approximately 15 meters downstream of Antenna (01). Antenna (02) did not experience any lapse of coverage while installed. The array had a total of 15 files downloaded throughout the Antenna (02) interrogation period. The last download for this antenna occurred on 05-17-2021 at 1300 hrs due to high flows and was removed.

PIT tag interrogation system (Antenna 03) for the Mid-Valley Pond began on 04-26-2021 at 1300 hrs. Antenna (03) was located approximately 15 meters downstream of Antenna (02). Antenna (03) was never moved, but did experience a lapse of coverage between 05-11-2021 at 2100 hrs and 05-14-2021 at 0100 hrs. A total of 10 files were downloaded throughout the Antenna (03) interrogation period. The last download for this antenna occurred on 05-17-2021 at 1300 hrs due to high flows and was removed.
