FOS - Foster Dam Weir

Status:   Decommissioned
Site Type: Instream Remote Detection System  |  Organization: Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife
General Operational Period: Seasonally
Start Date: 5/15/2014 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/31/2018 9:00 AM

The Foster Dam Weir antenna is located in spillway #4 at Foster Dam on the South Santiam River just upstream from the town of Sweet Home, Oregon. The site consists of two ferrite shielded flat plate antennas. Each antenna housing measures 11-feet by 42-inches. One antenna is mounted on each side of the weir opening. Two IS1001-ACN transceivers are mounted on the rear of the weir and have a 6-foot antenna lead. CAN-Bus (+power) cable connects the ACNs to one another and to the IS1001 MTS-MC. Site was removed in January 2018

Operational History

Operational history describes the period the site was interrogating for PIT tags. The comments provide anecdotal information about the operation of the site during this period. Site operational periods are updated typically at the end of the calendar year.

Year Start Date End Date Comments
2018 1/1/2018 12:00 AM 1/31/2018 9:00 AM Site permanently removed for new weir installation. No plans for PIT detection on new weir.
2017 1/1/2017 12:00 AM 1/1/2018 12:00 AM Check event logs for information about weir operations.

Configuration

Configuration metadata includes details about the equipment used at the site to detect and record PIT tags. A new configuration sequence record is created when equipment is added or removed from the site and the period of time it was active. A configuration sequence without an End Date is currently active.

Event Date Event Type Comments
1/31/2018 9:00:00 AM SiteDown Site decommissioned for replacement with a new weir. Presently there are no plans to run PIT detection on the new weir.
3/1/2017 6:00:00 AM General The tainter gate behind the weir was opened on 3/1/17 at 0600 allowing fish to pass over the weir and over the dam.
10/19/2016 3:00:00 PM General The tainter gate behind the weir was opened on 10/19 making the weir operational to pass fish. Any detections from this point on should be of fish passing the dam.
9/17/2016 12:00:00 AM General No test tag detections today on either antenna
8/23/2016 12:00:00 AM General No test tag detections today on either antenna
7/13/2016 6:00:00 PM General The tainter gate behind the weir was closed on 7/13/16. The antenna still remains operational and able to detect fish, but fish can not pass over the dam until the gate is opened again later this fall.
4/29/2016 11:30:00 AM SiteUp The weir went back into operation today. The reservoir was filled to summer high pool elevation and the weir was raised to the new level. The tainter gate was re-opened allowing fish to pass the dam via weir spill.
4/22/2016 8:00:00 AM SiteDown Spill over the weir was stopped as the reservoir was brought up to summer high pool elevation. The tainter gate behind the weir was closed. The antenna was still operating but fish detected could not pass the dam via the weir.
3/21/2016 1:00:00 PM General The spillway tainter gate behind the weir was opened in 3/21 allowing water to flow over the weir.
3/10/2016 8:35:00 AM General No test tag detections today on either antenna
3/3/2016 8:35:00 AM General No test tag detections today on either antenna
2/26/2016 8:35:00 AM General No test tag detections today on either antenna
2/23/2016 12:00:00 PM General Antenna #1 operating
2/19/2016 12:00:00 PM General Antenna #1 down
2/12/2016 8:35:00 AM General No test tag detections today on either antenna
1/16/2016 12:00:00 PM General Antenna #1 operating with high noise
1/11/2016 12:00:00 PM General Antenna #1 down
12/7/2015 7:00:00 AM General The spillway tainter gate was closed behind the weir causing water to pool around the weir. The weir antenna was still functioning but there was no flowing water to pass fish. Any detections after this date would be of fish milling near the antenna.
11/4/2015 12:00:00 PM SiteUp System operational
11/2/2015 12:00:00 PM SiteDown System down
10/6/2015 12:00:00 PM General Antenna #1 operational
10/5/2015 8:00:00 AM General The weir went back into operation on 05 October, 2015 around 0800. The reservoir pool elevation was lowered to ~613 ft (+/- 1 ft) and the tainter gate behind the weir was opened allowing fish to spill over the weir. Although the antenna on the weir has been functioning prior this date, fish can now use the weir to pass the dam.
9/23/2015 12:00:00 PM General Antenna #1 down or very high noise
9/12/2015 12:00:00 PM SiteUp System operational
9/7/2015 12:00:00 PM SiteDown System down
