MRR records are created from mark, recapture, passive recapture, and recovery data collection events.
Researchers assign one of these four event types to each record during data collection. A Mark event is the first data collection event that is possible, and involves initial implanting of the PIT tag into a live fish and recording where, when and what was tagged and released, and by whom. Once a fish has been marked and released, it may be recaptured by other researchers who are monitoring fish in-river. There are two types of recapture events: Recapture and Passive Recapture. A Recapture occurs when a fish is captured, handled and associated data about that fish are recorded. A Passive Recapture occurs when a fish is opportunistically detected at a location other than an interrogation site. It should be used when a fish is detected, but not handled, and that observation point could be interesting or useful to researchers. An opportunity also exists for the fish, or the bare tag, to be recovered after the fish has died, which results in a Recovery event.
When MRR records are processed for loading into the database, they are checked to ensure that they are not duplicates of records already in the database. If they appear to be duplicates, they are assigned an event type of Mark Duplicate, Recapture Duplicate, Passive Recapture Duplicate, or Recovery Duplicate, by PTAGIS as necessary. Two other events can be assigned by PTAGIS to MRR records as a result of loading data: Orphan and Disown. An Orphan record is created if it is detected or recaptured before the Mark event has been loaded into PTAGIS. A Disown record is created when a Mark record is removed from PTAGIS. This table contains definitions for each of the event types which can be assigned to an MRR record.
Event Type |
Definition |
Mark |
The event during which a fish is initially marked with a PIT tag and released (or planned to be released). Only one mark event is allowed for each PIT tag code. |
Mark Duplicate |
Assigned to a record during the loading process if a Mark record with the same PIT tag already exists in PTAGIS. |
Recapture |
The event during which a previously PIT-tagged fish is recaptured, scanned by hand, handled and released (or planned to be released). Multiple recapture events are allowed for each PIT tag code as long as the dates are different. |
Recapture Duplicate |
Assigned to a record during the loading process if a Recapture record with the same PIT tag and Release Date (Event Date if Release Date is null) already exists in PTAGIS. |
Recovery |
The event during which a previously released PIT tag is recovered from or detected in a dead fish, or is recovered or detected as a bare tag, or is removed from the possibility of being recaptured or detected in the future. Multiple recovery events are allowed for each PIT tag code as some PIT tags, while obviously no longer in a living fish, may be detected multiple times without a physical recovery (e.g. carcass surveys, avian nesting sites). |
Recovery Duplicate |
Assigned to a record during the loading process if a Recovery with the same PIT tag and Event Date already exists in PTAGIS. |
Passive Recapture |
The event during which a previously PIT-tagged fish is detected by unattended or remotely operated detection equipment at a location other than an interrogation site and is not handled. It differs from a Recapture event in that the fish is not handled, only detected. Multiple passive recapture events are allowed for each PIT tag code as long as the dates are different. |
Passive Recapture Duplicate |
Assigned to a record during the loading process if a Passive Recapture record with the same PIT tag and Release Date (Event Date if Release Date is null) already exists in PTAGIS. |
Disown |
This event type is assigned to a record that was previously loaded with a Mark event when that record is dotted out or removed from a subsequent version of the original tagging file. |
Orphan |
This event type is assigned to tag if it is reported to PTAGIS as an Observation, Recapture, Recovery, or Passive Recapture before the Mark event record has been reported to PTAGIS. When a Mark record is reported for that tag, it will replace the Orphan record. |
