Project
Title: 2017 Lyons Ferry Hatchery Complex -Snake River, Steelhead Tributary Releases
Project Lead: todd miller
Agency: WDFW
Project Number:
Funding Agency: LSRCP
Project Objectives: For 2017, we request that all PIT tagged fish will be placed in "Monitor Mode: No Action Taken" (i.e. fish are treated like they do not have a PIT tag). Having these fish placed in "Monitor Mode" should not jeopardize any other listed fish that may be in the area as they migrate through the dams, and actual "takes" on all listed fish that we do plan to PIT tag (Tucannon and Touchet endemic hatchery stock) are covered under HGMP's submitted to NOAA Fisheries for the Tucannon and Touchet endemic stock hatchery programs. The fish we release as smolts could encounter the transportation systems at Lower Granite, Little Goose, Lower Monumental, and McNary dams. We request the "No Action Taken" at each of the facilities where appropriate, based on the release group location. As a side note, we are working with the Fish Passage Center on their Comparative Survival Study (CSS) for steelhead above Lower Granite Dam. An additional 2,000 PIT tags will be used at our Cottonwood Acclimation Facility on the lower Grande Ronde River as part of their study. These 2,000 additional tags will not be submitted in our list of tags for SbyC. We’ll coordinate our CSS tagging/release with Fish Passage Center. Further, we do not see the need to use the SbyC system when these fish return as adults, so no extra accommodations will be needed in the future. The purpose of the tagging in each of these groups are to estimate smolt-to-adult survivals and total adult contribution back to the Snake River, and to monitor straying of these groups into other systems.Juvenile steelhead released from Lyons Ferry Hatchery and its facilities.
Study Description: For the past ten years, WDFW Lyons Ferry Hatchery Evaluation staff has PIT tagged and released hatchery summer steelhead and hatchery fall Chinook, and has used the Separation by Code (SbyC) system. PIT tagged fish have been released into the Tucannon, Touchet, Walla Walla, Grande Ronde, and Snake rivers.Previous separation by code was completed for Lyons Ferry Hatchery Complex steelhead releases, Joe Bumgarner.
